Barn Quilts of Delaware County

Barn Quilts of Delaware County

The Barn Quilt project was first started in Adams County, Ohio in 2001 to bring tourism into a very depressed rural area. From there it has spread to many states, including Iowa in 2003.

Grundy County was the first in Iowa to implement the project to bring tourism back into their county off the newly finished Highway 20. Buchanan County took up the project in April 2006 with the thought of not only bringing tourism back into the county, but also viewing our unique barns along with the age old art of quilting.

Delaware County joined the project in 2008 and served until 2023 along with 97 counties,
with a goal to have a “clothesline of quilts” clear across the state.

The Barn Quilts of Delaware County Committee was made up of 6 individuals who were invested in preserving the art of quilting and designing unique patterns for families to enjoy all across Delaware County and the list of barn quilt locations shows just that.

For anyone interested in constructing their own barn quilt, guidance is available from former Construction Coordinator, Dean Sherman.
Please reach out to Delaware County Tourism for more information.
